Home / Tune-up checklist
What a good AC tune-up should include
Not every "tune-up" is the same. Use this list to know what to expect, and to ask about anything that gets skipped.
Outdoor unit
- Capacitor tested with a meter, not just looked at
- Contactor checked for pitting or burn marks
- Coil cleaned and fins inspected
- Fan motor and blade checked
- Refrigerant pressures checked against the manufacturer's specs
- Electrical connections tightened and inspected for corrosion
Indoor unit
- Filter checked or replaced
- Blower wheel inspected for dust buildup
- Evaporator coil checked
- Condensate drain line and safety float switch tested
- Temperature difference measured between supply and return air
Thermostat and ducts
- Thermostat calibration and schedule checked
- Visible ductwork in the attic checked for disconnected or crushed runs
Ask for a short written summary after the visit. It's useful for warranty records and helps you spot problems that are getting worse year over year.
